Building safety minister resigns

Building safety and fire minister Lord Greenhalgh has resigned.

The move follows the resignation last week of prime minister Boris Johnson.

In a letter to Johnson on Friday (8 July), Lord Greenhalgh said: “As building safety minister, I have worked hard to ensure that a tragedy like Grenfell never happens again. The Building Safety Act is the landmark legislation that delivers on that mission.”

He added: “I am saddened at the turn of events that has resulted in your decision to stand down as prime minister. Now that the die has been cast, I have decided that this is the right time for me to resign.”

Lord Greenhalgh took the unpaid role of minister for building and fire safety in September 2021. He was previously an unpaid minister of state at the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government and the Home Office between March 2020 and 19 September 2021.

Lord Greenhalgh previously worked for Johnson at City Hall when Johnson was mayor of London. He served as deputy mayor for policing and crime in London from 2012 until 2016.
